The Comprehensive Institute Laura Lanza lies within one of the newest districts in Carini, a disadvantaged area for social-economic aspects. It was built around the area P.E.E.P. in which the popular buildings and the residential ones merge creating a heterogeneous social and economical reality. The area P.E.E.P., born in order to satisfy the need of the local population, was assigned to the several

inhabitants coming from the outskirts of Palermo. Buildings, houses one next to another and well-kept villas are surrounded by green but dirty and abandoned spaces. In the district there is a multi-sports municipal structure shared with the school. Most inhabitants of the district work in the industrial area, in the public administration or as professional men. Due to the increasing economic crisis and the lack of resources the unemployment level is getting higher and higher as the years go by ; many poor families live in this district. One of the worst facts of the district is the vandalism , the lack of respect towards the environment , the surroundings and every public open space , and the loss of the sense of living together .People’s behaviour towards the others is worsening .

Gimnajum im. marszalka Jozefa Pilsudskiego is a school located in a village . It is the only junior high school in the commune. Currently we have 10 classes, more than thirty teachers and about 300 students , including teenagers from a nearby orphanage. Our school is actively involved in the community life . It collaborates with various institutions and the local press. It has a rich programme of school events . Young people can broaden their knowledge and skills through additional educational classes devoted to specific subjects in classrooms which are well equipped with ICT technology. From the very beginning of its existence , the school has been looking for various opportunities to promote the European dimension in the school curriculum and to motivate rural youth aged 13-16 to meet and correspond with their peers from other countries , travel and explore the world that exists outside of their village.

The members of the European Club, which operates in our school, have been the initiators of many activities promoting European integration since 2000. They have carried out two three-year school collaboration projects: Socrates and LLP. In 2001-2007 they were participants of the exchange with the Italian youth under the “Youth” programme in the framework of the German PNWM and several informal exchanges with the Ukrainian choir. A few years ago our school participated in a two-year Comenius project connected with Maths and

with music: European voices. We are in constant, active and long-term cooperation with a Ukrainian musical school for blind and deaf students. We did a project with a school from Eastern Europe about the help for disabled students. At the moment almost all the teachers are participating in a two-year Erasmus+ project, Key Action 1 – education mobility for teachers, which aims at improving the participants’ language competences , ICT skills and our students’ learning outcomes.

The European Club is organising regular workshops for primary schools from our commune, focusing on the development of different European languages: English, German, Russian, Italian, Spanish. The students from our school take active part in preparing quizzes, linguistic and cultural tests and musical competitions. Our students are the winners of many musical contests. We have choir classes and extra choir workshops for our talented students.
